Holiday Getaway: Experiencing Christmas in St. Victoria’s Island

During Christmas time my wife and I enjoy visiting destinations that offer something special during the holiday season. In 2024, our choice was Victoria Island BC.

Choosing our accommodations was an easy choice … the Fairmont Empress Hotel.

First, I’d like to thank GM Dan McGowan and his staff for making our stay memorable. Now, a little bit about the Fairmont Empress Hotel.

The Fairmont Empress Hotel in Victoria, BC, is one of Canada's most iconic and historic luxury hotels. Located in the heart of the city, it overlooks the scenic Inner Harbor, offering stunning views of the waterfront and surrounding landscapes. Here’s a closer look at this renowned hotel:

History and Architecture
Opened in 1908, the Fairmont Empress was designed by the architectural firm Samuel Maclure and Francis Rattenbury in a grand Beaux-Arts style, with influences from Italian Renaissance and French chateau architecture.

It was originally built to accommodate travelers arriving by ship on the Canadian Pacific Railway, which aimed to create a luxurious experience for visitors to the west coast.

The hotel is a designated heritage building, with its stunning exterior, marble lobby, and elegant interiors reflecting the opulence of the early 20th century.

Afternoon Tea at the Fairmont Empress
One of the highlights of visiting the Empress is experiencing its world-famous Afternoon Tea service. It's a long-standing tradition at the hotel, and it offers guests an elegant and relaxing experience. I’ve had tea in many hotels, the Empress now ranks top of my list!

Served in the Lobby Lounge, the tea features a selection of premium teas, finger sandwiches, freshly baked scones with jam and clotted cream, and delicate pastries.

Afternoon Tea at the Empress is considered one of the best in the world and is a quintessential Victoria experience.

The hotel offers a range of accommodations, from classic rooms to opulent suites, many of which feature views of the Inner Harbour or the hotel’s beautifully manicured gardens.

Guests can enjoy modern amenities with a touch of historical elegance. The rooms and suites combine contemporary comforts with antique-inspired decor to create an inviting, luxurious atmosphere.

Dining
In addition to Afternoon Tea, the hotel features The Empress Room, an upscale restaurant offering contemporary Canadian cuisine with a focus on local ingredients and sustainable practices.

The hotel also has Q Bar, a stylish and comfortable place to enjoy cocktails, light bites, and drinks while relaxing in the bar’s cozy atmosphere.

Spa and Wellness
The Willow Stream Spa at the Fairmont Empress is a destination in itself. With a range of treatments and therapies designed to rejuvenate and relax, the spa offers guests a serene, luxurious experience. The spa features facials, massages, body treatments, and wellness services.

The hotel also has an indoor pool, fitness center, and offers yoga sessions for those seeking relaxation or physical wellness.

Location and Views
The Empress is ideally located in the heart of Victoria’s Inner Harbor, offering easy access to many of the city’s top attractions, including the Royal BC Museum, BC Legislature, and the Victoria Clipper ferry terminal.

The hotel's historic location also provides stunning views of the Harbor and surrounding areas, making it an excellent base for exploring the city.

Royal Connections
The hotel has hosted royalty, dignitaries, and celebrities throughout its history. Queen Elizabeth II stayed at the hotel in 1951, marking one of the hotel’s many notable royal connections.
