Sunsets, Serenity, and Catalina Charm

My wife and I agree that sometimes, all you need is a change of scenery to recharge—and Catalina Island, just 22 miles off the Southern California coast, delivers exactly that. With its Mediterranean charm, laid-back pace, and endless ocean views, it’s the perfect destination for an extended weekend getaway. From scenic trails and wildlife sightings to fresh seafood and rooftop cocktails, Catalina feels like a world away while being remarkably easy to reach. Here's how we spent an unforgettable long weekend soaking up everything this island gem has to offer.

Getting There: The Adventure Begins
Getting to Catalina Island is half the fun. We caught the Catalina Express from Long Beach, a comfortable hour-long ferry ride that offers views of the open Pacific and, if you’re lucky, playful dolphins along the way. The moment Avalon Harbor came into view, I knew I was in for something special. Colorful boats bobbed in the turquoise water, palm trees lined the shore, and charming pastel buildings peeked out from the hills. Just a warning, the drinks they serve on the ride over are strong, at least for me. So here we go with no cars, no high-rises—just island time.

Home Base: The Bellanca Hotel
For our stay, we checked into the Bellanca Hotel, a modern boutique property just steps from the beach in Avalon.

Its fresh, airy design and prime location make it an ideal base for exploring Avalon. The rooms are bright and thoughtfully furnished, with cozy beds, modern bathrooms, and beachy décor that feels both relaxing and upscale.

One of the highlights … the rooftop sundeck. Morning coffee up there, with the sound of waves and views of the harbor waking up, is something I won’t soon forget. And when we didn’t feel like venturing far for a bite, the hotel’s restaurant, The Naughty Fox, had us covered with coastal-inspired small plates and craft cocktails. Their poke nachos and pineapple margaritas were perfect post-adventure fuel. Keep in mind, it’s Catalina Island, we paid north of $500 per-night, usually, we would be staying at our favorite the Marriott Autograph Collection for that price … but hey, it’s only money!

Exploring the Island by a Private Golf Cart Tour
One of the best ways to get a feel for the island is by booking a private golf cart tour. Our tour guide for the afternoon was Dudley, a gentleman that has spent his life on the island, so we really got the scoop from him.

He followed the scenic loop that winds through Avalon’s hills, taking in sweeping views of the harbor below, the historic Catalina Casino, and the vast Pacific stretching to the horizon. Dudley made plenty of stops along the way—at the scenic overlook for some photos, at the Wrigley Memorial & Botanic Garden for a peaceful stroll, and even just to watch the deer grazing by the roadside.

It was the perfect way to get a feel for the island beyond the main tourist spots. Whether you're visiting for the first time or returning for a deeper look, a private golf cart tour is a must-do—equal parts adventure and charm.

A Taste of Catalina: Dining at Steve’s
Dinner our first night was at Steve’s Steakhouse and Seafood, perched above Avalon’s bustling front street with stunning views of the harbor. This was hands-down one of the best dining experiences of the trip. I opted for the grilled swordfish, fresh and flavorful, while my wife chose the filet mignon, which was perfectly cooked and tender. Everything—from the warm bread and crisp Caesar salad to the wine and sunset—was top-notch.

The service was attentive without being intrusive, and the ambiance was relaxed yet elegant. With golden hour lighting up the water below, it felt like one of those meals you remember long after the plates are cleared.

Relaxation & Island Vibes
No trip to Catalina is complete without some proper downtime. On Saturday morning, we walked the waterfront promenade, stopping into a few boutique shops and grabbing a smoothie bowl from Lloyd’s, the old-fashioned candy shop known for its saltwater taffy. Afterward, I headed to Descanso Beach Club, where you can rent a lounger, sip drinks with your toes in the sand, and swim in the crystal-clear cove.

What is great about Catalina Island is that you can spend a lazy afternoon there, alternating between reading, napping, and ordering off their beachside menu. Or, you’re feeling more adventurous, the club also offers kayaking and paddleboard rentals, and there’s even a zipline tour nearby for thrill-seekers.

Into the Wild: Catalina’s Interior

You can also book a Jeep Eco Tour through the Catalina Island Conservancy, which will allow you to explore parts of the island most visitors never see. The interior is rugged, vast, and surprisingly wild—rolling hills, untouched coastline, and an abundance of native plants and animals.

The biggest surprise? Bison. Yes, bison. A herd was brought to the island in the 1920s for a movie shoot and never left. Today, they roam freely and are carefully managed by the conservancy. Seeing these massive animals against the backdrop of the ocean was surreal and awe-inspiring.

A Bit of History
Before leaving, we took a guided tour of the iconic Catalina Casino, not a gambling hall, but rather a historic art deco building that once hosted glamorous dances and movie screenings in the 1930s. The circular ballroom is breathtaking, and the interior theater still plays classic films. It’s a must-visit if you’re interested in architecture, Hollywood history, or just want to see a different side of the island’s culture.

Tips for Visiting Catalina

To make the most of your Catalina Island weekend, here are a few tips I picked up:

• Book the ferry in advance, especially for holiday weekends. Round-trip tickets can sell out quickly.

• If you're staying in Avalon, you can walk almost everywhere but renting a golf cart or bike for a few hours adds a fun, flexible way to explore.

• Pack layers—the weather can shift from sunny and warm to breezy and cool, especially at night.

• Make dining reservations if you’re visiting during peak season. Many popular restaurants fill up fast.

• If you want to explore the island’s interior, consider a Conservancy membership for access to certain areas and discounts on eco tours.

Final Thoughts: A Weekend to Remember
Catalina Island offers the perfect mix of relaxation, adventure, and charm. Whether you're sipping a cocktail on a rooftop, hiking a quiet canyon trail, cruising through Avalon in a golf cart, or enjoying fresh seafood as the sun goes down, every moment feels both special and easy. It's the kind of place where time slows down, your phone stays in your bag a little longer, and the memories last well beyond the boat ride home.

So, if you’re dreaming of a weekend escape that’s both accessible and extraordinary, Catalina Island is calling. And trust me—it’s worth answering.
